Backing vs Rug Grippers – what’s the difference?

Backing is an additional layer, stitched into the construction of the rug. This can give your rug more dimensional stability and provide a thicker cushier feel underfoot. We offer an optional felt backing that will be stitched to the underside of your carpet choice and will provide comfort as well as help keep the rug in place.

A Rug Gripper will be provided as part of your purchase with us. This is a lace-look mat that sits underneath your rug and helps to keep the rug in place. It is designed to be thin and discreet and is cut to fit your custom dimensions. It should sit just inside the border of your rug so that it remains hidden.

Benefits of Optional Backing

Add thickness to lower pile carpet

If your chosen carpet has a lower pile, you may want to consider taking the optional backing which will provide your rug with additional padding and add to the comfort underfoot. The optional backing is a felt material that will be stitched onto the underside of the rug.

Provide comfort underfoot.

Backing will give extra cushioning for a comfortable feeling underfoot, and it will also reduce any noise from footsteps. This is also a useful feature for rugs in children’s rooms or playrooms, providing a soft playspace for them.

Benefits of a Rug Gripper

Prevent your rug from slipping.

Your non-slip Rug Gripper will help to keep your rug in the desired position and prevent it from being a trip or slip hazard. This is particularly useful for hall runners that see heavy foot traffic and aren’t necessarily pinned down with furniture sitting on them.

Protect your flooring underneath the rug.

Depending on the carpet backing, sometimes fine scratches can occur on soft timber floors where there is constant foot traffic. In this instance, a rug pad not only provides a cushioned step, but also protection to your hard floor.
