Signature Rug Placement Guide

Proper rug proportions and placement is essential for creating an inviting space. Your rug should anchor your furniture, helping to define the space, so if in doubt, go larger! Here’s a helpful guide for effective and impactful placement of rugs in various rooms of your home:

Living Room

Define the space: Ideally, the rug should extend at least 20cm beyond the back of the couch, and around all furniture items, defining the seating area and creating a unified look for your living room furniture. Keep your entertainment unit on hard flooring for a more stable foundation, particularly if your TV is sitting on top.

Smaller Rug option: If your couch is against a wall, opt for a rug that either nestles right up to it or starts about 20cm from the wall. This is the “half-on half-off” option that still connects your furniture into a cohesive setting.

Dining Room

Under the Table: The rug should be large enough to accommodate the dining table and chairs, even when the chairs are pulled out. A good rule of thumb is to have the rug extend about 70cm beyond the table on all sides. This ensures that the chairs remain on the rug even when in use, preventing the rug from becoming an obstacle.

Bedroom

Under the Bed: For a balanced look, position the rug under the bed with it extending at least 50cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. This creates a soft, warm surface underfoot when you step out of bed.

Hallway

Runner Rugs: In narrow spaces like hallways, a runner rug can add warmth, soften footfalls and guide guests through your home. Ensure the runner is centered with equal space on either side. The rug should not touch the walls but leave a small gap, creating a clean and proportional look.

Round Rugs

For Any Room: Round rugs are perfect for creating focal points, especially in square rooms. Use a large round rug in a living room to define a conversation area. You can also use it as an accent rug next to a bed or use a round rug to pull focus to a vignette.
